Karwa Chauth 2020: Fasting rules & rituals


Karwa Chauth 2020 will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, all across the country. The festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated by married women in India for the long life and well being of their husband. The Karwa Chauth is more popular in the northern part of the country including the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
Karwa Chauth fasting rules & rituals
On the day of Karwa Chauth, women wake up early to eat and drink before sunrise and then keep fast till the Sunset. During Karwa Chauth vrat, women keep fast from sunrise to sunset and do not eat or dring anything during the fasting period. On Karwa Chauth occasion, fasting women wear traditional dresses like saari or lehenga to look their best. Fasting women also apply henna to their hands and wear bridal makeup and jewellery.
On the eve of Karwa Chauth, women-only ceremony is held where they sit in a circle with their puja thalis. Depending on the local tradition, story of Karva Chauth is narrated along with puja songs. After Karwa Chauth puja, women await the rising of the moon. Once the moon is visible, fasting woman view moon or its reflection in a vessel filled with water, through a sieve and then view their husband. Fasting women offer arka (water) and fruit/sweets to the moon and pray for the long life of their husband. After that, husband takes the water and fruits from the thali and offers it to his wife to break the fast. The Karwa Chauth celebration is completed with a big feast.
